Ever wish there was a pill you could take or perhaps a fruit or vegetable you could eat that would end writer's block? Well no need, This guide by Andrew Mayne was all the inspiration I needed to fight through my procrastination and get started writing again. This guide provides excellent tips to find ways around the endless excuses we use to get going and stick through it until the end. I actually found that much of the advice Mayne provides will help me in other future creative projects (not just writing).
This gets a three star rating in my opinion because the large "How To" right at the top is very misleading - there is little or no "how to" advice in this book, including on the title subject of a novella in 24 hours. Instead, there are short and very light essays on things like the experience of writing said novella; the experience, not the process. "Writing a Novella in 24 Hours" would have been a better title, because the "how" is decidedly lacking. That said, the book was a quick and pleasant read on my commute home, and if the author fails to dispense anything beyond some very basic common sense advice then the little anecdotes were still fun to read. So, three stars - don't expect any actual advice, but do read if you enjoy short tidbits of a writer talking about their writing experiences.
Maybe some people enjoy this book because they haven't been writing for very long. For the rest of us that have been writing both professionally and for fun, this is probably the biggest waste of time you can invest in. The title is misleading. There is nothing, I repeat nothing, in this book about the actual process of writing. This book is full of nothing but Andrew Mayne's subtle bragging (but why though? What does he have to brag about?) and condescending tone of voice towards writers who might want to pioneer a different genre than he does. He talks down historical fiction and I honestly have no idea why. I want to rip the title off this book and replace it with "How to market self-published works on ". I failed to find any tips for completing 30,000 words in 24 hours other than one chapter where he just says "Just do it". There are no suggestions for how to manage your time, outline tricks, unique ways of plotting, or anything else that might actually help you write a novella in 24 hours. I'm not joking, there was NOTHING that would help you write a novella in 24 hours. He loves talking about how self-published works look so "unprofessional" when they're unedited, but I found at least three typos. It looks like he wrote the entire thing in a day and then slapped it onto for some quick cash. I'm never picking up anything by Andrew Mayne ever again. If you're actually looking to expand your knowledge as a writer, I suggest Rayne Hall and James Scott Bell. Neither of them will talk down to you or act superior. They actually give writing tips and exercises to try. Don't waste your money buying a paper copy of this like I did!How the heck this book has so many five stars is beyond me. If it actually helped you, then good for you. If you love to write and are looking for some new inspiration, I'm begging you to pass this one up.
Fantastic, I wouldn't expect any less from Andrew Mayne. I first discovered his unique genius during my Magic career, and have always enjoyed his outside the box style of thinking. In this novella on how to write a novella he boils down sime great tips on creativity into simple to follow instructions without anything unnecessary. He has given me some ideas and inspiration to tackle some Web of my iwn stalled out projects.
Between this book and Ginie Sayles brilliant 'How to Write A Book In 3 Weeks or Less'.....you've got all you need to write both fiction and non-fiction quickly and easily. Plow thru that project! Get both books. Highly recommended.
Andrew's a pretty magical kind of guy who practices the fine art of legerdemain, writes novels, and manages to connect with people on a personal level as he shares his craft. And now he's helped folks break through their creative blocks to become writers. While this is a quick read, the advice he gives will last if you take his suggestions on and do some work! How nice to read a book that's both inspirational and fun--by such an amazingly humble and rich talent of a human being!
I've read countless books that offer bits and pieces of information and advice on how to get your stories started, moving forward, and complete. This is probably the first book that I have read that puts it all together in a way that is short and succinct, and makes sense.I wish I had read a book like this 20 years ago. It would have save me some time and allowed me to focus on one writing project at a time.Kudos to the author!
The way Andrew Mayne embraces the changing landscape of book publishing is refreshing. E-publishing Serials and Novella's are the future. Not only does Mayne offer advice on writing your novella, but he offers practical advice on publishing, attracting readers and building an empire. Andrew's skills and experience make him uniquely qualified to write such a book and any aspiring author would be wise to read it.
