This is perhaps the most effective book you will find to learn about the Middle East. The book is well written, concise (considering the breadth of time and geography covered), and informative. An easy read for those that are interested in the subject matter. I would recommend this book as the starting point for anyone interested about the Middle East and Central Asia (since Central Asia has been and continues to be interrelated).I read the 6th edition many years ago and purchased the 10th edition for the update. I would recommend it for anyone deploying, working, or living in the region. The information gleaned was extremely helpful in understanding current political and cultural issues. There are instances where the author suggests his own personal political opinions, but if you can ignore such comments (they tend to stand out), then the book will serve as an excellent historical text.
This is a carefully researched, unusually well-balanced, fair treatment of a fascinating and central area of human civilization.
