This is a great collection of tips and tricks that everyone can use. Some of my favorites have to do with paint bushes like bringing them back to life with vinegar and trimming old ones up to use a small dust broom on my workbench. There are tons of recycling tips which I will definitely use around my house. The plant care tips and especially ideas for protecting fruit from animals will definitely be implemented as the squirrels and birds go after my fruit with a vengeance. Most of the tips and tricks can be done with other simple things from around the house which I love. This will be a great go to guide when dealing with problems all over the house and yard.
The Mother Earth News Almanac: A Guide Through the Seasons is an incredible collection of how-to knowledge in one jam packed book. It has everything a person needs to know to become more self-sufficient and utilize DYI advice to simplify life. When I was reading this book I felt that I was getting advice from my beloved Grandma and Grandpa. It was originally published in the 1970's and has been updated, but much of what is in this book and that was written in the 70's is still relevant today. I love that this book is broken down by seasons, which makes it very user friendly. I cannot wait to start to utilize this book. I am starting in Spring and I am going to make my way through the seasons. Some of my favorite advice is that of how to grow a garden. I love that an illustrated chart in this book. It breaks down what fruits and veggies to plant together for the optimal garden. I feel that this book has given me the confidence to finally create my own home garden. But this book is so much more than that. It also teaches you to grill steaks over sawdust, how to build a kite, how to tie knots, how to join posts, how to use tea to clean varnished hardwood and so much more. I would say that is book is a must have for anyone who wants to live a simpler, healthier and more self sufficient life. I feel that I have barely scratched the surface of what this book has to offer. It is a plethora of information and a 5 star book! I cannot wait to continue to read, learn and utilize the information is contains. I also plan to share this book with others, so they can also get a copy for themselves!
Imagine a book which contains all the wisdom of of the ages ... tips from "old timers" as well as information recently gathered. Imagine a book which covers any situation you might encounter in your daily life ... everything from treating a cold to removing spots from clothing to building a root cellar. While this book may not include every single bit of information available to us today, a person would be hard pressed to find something which it doesn't cover. It is organized by season. Spring offers advice on such things as early planting, using kitchen ingredients to make cosmetics, and making kites for a breezy day. Summer teaches us things like how to protect trash bins from animals, make onion butter, and how to make loose screws hold in wood. Autumn's section talks about bartering, making sauerkraut, using salt to clean furniture, and so much more. Winter discusses, among other things, using wood ashes to de-skid a driveway, how to polish your shoes with lemon, and how to identify animal tracks in the snow. All of the information is easy to read and understand. One won't find page after page of involved instructions but rather pertinent information which can be quickly referenced and used.I believe that Mother Earth News Almanac is for everyone, no matter where one lives or what their interests. I highly recommend it and I'm thrilled to add it to my library!I received a copy of this book in order to write this review. I received no other compensation. All opinions expressed are mine and mine alone and reflect my honest opinion of the material reviewed.
