Love the almanac, don't like the Kindle format for it. The is not a criticism of the Kindle in general, rather this particular type of content which does not lend itself well (in my opinion) to a digital format. I like to skip around in the book, revisiting specific parts, saving others for later in the season, etc. Kindle presentation is linear and thwarts this kind of reading. I'll be ordering a paper copy.
Every year for more years than I care to remember, I've been getting the OFA and using it throughout the year.Interesting articles, the classic weather forecast (which is so general in its forecasts that it's hard to say they're wrong) and fascinating data keep me coming back year after year, decade after decade.
Too much to pay for a magazine full of ads. It is not what it used to be.
It is still the best for tides and utility. You can figure out tides accurately enough for anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere for sure and probably the southern hemisphere. Unless you have to know the exact minute tides will turn, which if you need that you better be there well beforehand anyway. As far as planting information I could not say if it is useful elsewhere than New England. Plus there is a bunch of interesting information when you read it. Also it is small.
I bought this because it reminded me of my childhood. Mamma always had to have a new on each year as her parents did. I really enjoy the stories and hoping the weather holds true this season as in the book.
This is a good mix of leisure reading for me, but it's pretty functional too since I like to garden and plant a variety of veggies, herbs, perennials and annuals every year. It's nice to have a reference that I can go back to and check, since I can never remember details like frost dates, growing seasons, etc.I'm happy that I was able to have deliver this when it was released, since finding one locally can be really hit-or-miss most times.
I look forward every year to the next Farmer's Almanac. I have been getting them since I can remember, even read them as a child. This one is the special edition as it is their 225th anniversary. The book has just about everything you can think of to be helpful with the weather and outdoors. I like the 3 year calendar that I cut out and use in my daily planner. It is amazing how often I refer to something several years out. It is simple, black and white and very readable. The Almanac tells you step by step how to use and read all the charts. It initially takes some time to get the hang of all the symbols and how to read them all and you may have to refer back to the in key or instructions until you are use to it. But after awhile you can just look at the charts and read them. There are sunrise, sunsets, high tides, low tides, information on eclipses, planets, meteor showers, holidays. There is even a section of planting and for someone with a purple thumb, this really helped me out. I like some of the recipes and even went to the website to get more. (Nice collection of recipes on the site)The actual weather and precipitation that everyone counts on from the Almanac is done by regions making it much more accurate. There are 14 regions and you simply chose yours and read up on it. You don't have to read the others but I have friends, and I like to travel so I tend to read a lot of them.I have gotten a lot of my friends to read/buy the almanac and we have fun each year discussing our same or different regions. I love it but this one is a little more fun because of the anniversary material inside. Good reading to all.
I love the weather and gardening info in the Old Farmer's Almanac. I hate that it is becoming catalog for ads, new age crap in the personal ads in the back of the book. For this reason I won't be buying a 'hard' copy this year; just going to their website for gardening and weather.
